As if we needed more reasons to love Charleston, New York Magazine just added a few to our list.
In a June 2012 feature, Editor Edna Ishayik recommends Charleston, SC for its “growing surf scene and beachy activities” in an installment of the online magazine’s Five Point Weekend Escape Plan series.
The Wentworth Mansion topped Ishayik’s list of the best places to retire after a sun-drenched day on the shore. Though sleep of course, should come after shaking the sand from your flip flops and exploring the mansion grounds.
Ishayik lauds the “meticulously-restored” mansion and writes, “Prop your surfboard up under twelve-foot ceilings in one of the 21 spacious rooms and suites, many of which are outfitted with chandeliers and original gas fireplaces. In the evening, grab a bourbon from the honor bar and sip it on the rooftop cupola or enjoy complimentary wine and canapés in the sunroom.”
Other items noted on Ishayik’s picturesque beach weekend are places to fuel up (including our King Street neighbors Butcher & Bee and Bull Street Gourmet), ways to burn off those calories (like cycling through the city or stand up paddle boarding), and post-beach, off-the-beaten-path activities (like a bluegrass show at Awendaw Green or shopping trip down the funky Cannon Street.)
Stow away your surfboard and get some shut-eye at the Wentworth Mansion this summer for your own Charleston beach escape.
