Charleston Sunsets

Sunset Over the Battery January 13

Winter usually just about bypasses Charleston. We will get some chilly temperatures – our gardens will brace for a frost or two and we’ll turn the heat on low and keep sweaters in close proximity. So far, this winter has been an anomaly. We’ve been pulling shorts out of storage and relishing in sunny, 75 degree+ weather.
Sunset Over White Point Gardens January 15

Our guests are spending all day outside, making it a point to witness the sky being painted electric pink, red and blue at sunset. The best place to watch a Charleston sunset is just down the street from the Kings Courtyard Inn. Less than a mile (.7 miles, in fact) from our front door, the beautiful Battery and White Point Gardens await. “The Battery” stretches out over a mile along the tip of the Charleston peninsula from Murray Blvd to East Battery Street. Here Charleston’s two rivers, the Ashley and the Cooper, meet and offer a front row seat to a nightly show starring the sinking sun. Cue the sailboats, flocks of birds skimming the water and schools of swimming dolphins: you have yourself a free ticket to the best attraction in Charleston.

With the winter equinox behind us, the days are only getting longer. This means you can enjoy a cold beverage at our afternoon wine and cheese reception before walking down the street to send off the sun for the day.

Walking to the Battery in Charleston

Here is a direct walking route from the Kings Courtyard Inn to The Battery and edge of White Point Gardens. This takes you straight down King Street, offering views of historic homes, secret gardens, and fascinating architecture.

Extra tips for sunset enjoyment:

Bring a picnic, blanket and sprawl out in the green space of White Point Gardens.

Traveling with your dog? Well, they’re more than welcome here, too. You can even let them off leash to play with the other pups who congregate in the park.

Rent a bike for the day and return it only after you’ve meandered through the neighborhoods South of Broad and seen the sun set from every angle of The Battery.

And don’t forget your camera. You’ll never fully be able to explain this beautiful site to others, but you can try to capture the moment. You’ll be dreaming of it until your next visit to Charleston, which we hope is sooner rather than later.
