Dog-Friendly Adventures in Charleston

When we see four little furry legs walk through our door, we know we’re about to have some fun. We love hosting dogs here at the Wentworth Mansion- especially when they are as cute, adventurous and loveable as Danny the Bluetick Coonhound.

Dog at the Wentworth Mansion

Danny was a guest here in December, accompanied by Kate Mendez, the Pet Charity Director from BringFido.com. As part of the pet-friendly travel site’s new “Pet of the Day” program, Kate chooses a dog-loving city to explore, fosters a pup from a local animal shelter (in this case, The Charleston Animal Society) and kicks back in the area’s best pet-friendly hotel (BringFido.com selected the Wentworth Mansion as their dog-friendly home base!)

In Charleston for just 24-hours, Danny and Kate hit a few of our favorite recommended places for both dogs and people. They mostly ventured ‘off the peninsula’ as we say, and saw some dog-friendly sites within easy driving distance of the inn.

Dog Friendly Adventures in Charleston

First, Danny and Kate explored Magnolia Plantation. This 300-year old beauty is set along the Ashley River and is known for its ‘romantic gardens.’ The plantation is home to host of other animals in its miniature zoo (peacocks, goats, and foxes to name a few.) January and February are the best months to visit- the plantation’s winter-blooming Camellias are absolutely dazzling.

While out and about, Danny and Kate visited the magnificent Angel Oak Tree on John’s Island, one of the most incredible exhibits of both history and nature in Charleston. This is a dog’s dreamland, with 1,500 years of scents to sniff and plenty of space to run around with other pooches. After working up an appetite, the two stopped at Parsons Jack Cafe in West Ashley, a casual, dog friendly restaurant with a charming little patio- perfect for eating al fresco during Charleston’s mild winters.

Before retiring to a comfortable bed and cozy fireplace in their Garden Room at the Mansion, Danny and Kate took a scenic 15-minute walk to down to The Battery, a Charleston landmark that simply cannot be missed. (We always recommend timing it right to see the sun setting over the water…) The Battery is across from Whitepoint Gardens, an unofficial dog park in downtown Charleston. On any given day, you’ll see dogs of all sizes trotting around, chasing frisbees and stretched out in the sun with their owners. There are water fountains, doggie bags and trashcans around the park to make your life easier.

We weren’t surprised to hear that Danny was adopted just days after his stay at the Wentworth Mansion. Thanks Kate and Danny for paying us a visit! BringFido.com is an excellent resource for traveling the country with your dog. We are proud to be one of the sites’ recommended pet-friendly hotels in Charleston.
