Our perch on lower King Street is a fine place to be all year but- during Charleston’s springtime explosion of festivals and events, King Street really is the best place to be.
On the heels of Valentine’s Day, comes the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition- better known as SEWE. Just down the street from the Fulton Lane Inn, Marion Square is the center of SEWE action. Here, tents upon tents unfold in the park to reveal wildlife, art exhibits- even cooking demonstrations. Marion Square just is the center of the action – you’ll find SEWE events pop up all over downtown.
During SEWE, the Fulton Lane Inn will offer a special discounted hotel rate for full weekend enjoyment. We’ll prep you for a long day of downtown exploring with breakfast delivered to your room. You’ll also return each afternoon to a complimentary wine and cheese hour. This is the perfect time to chat with our staff about dinner reservations – and gives you a chance to kick back with a SEWE guide, relax and plan your next day. These are just a few amenities – the rest are just as much of a treat. Our special SEWE rate is $249 a night – call to reserve at 800-720-2688.
With thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and animal lovers filling our fine city, we can assure that Charleston is buzzing with activity. Here are a few of our staff’s picks for the best way to experience SEWE!
During your walk to Marion Square, be sure to take in all that is King Street. This row of local shops, restaurants and boutiques was voted one of the 10 Best Shopping Streets in America, and has something for everybody. Even if you’re just window shopping or perusing the great menus, or admiring the often-featured puppies and kittens in the store windows. On the evening of Friday the 15th, stroll down the street in the late afternoon to stumble upon the SEWE King Street Stroll. Merchants keep their doors open later and welcome in wildlife artists for some live painting and art demonstrations.
In a foodie town like Charleston, you can expect food to have its rightful and very important place at every event. SEWE, of course, is no different. On Saturday, February 16th at 2:00 pm, make your way to the tents at Marion Square for the SC Agricultural Chef Demo. The Executive Chef of our sister restaurant, Circa 1886, will be here doing what he does best: cooking! If you like what you see, make reservations to try more of Chef Marc Collins’ fare for dinner at Circa 1886. (In the spirit of the weekend, try out his signature antelope dish.)
Round out your weekend with one of the most fun and exciting SEWE events – The Dock Dog Two Tank Finals. Stop by the riverfront Brittlebank Park around 4:00 on Sunday, February 17th to watch dogs of all breeds and sizes show off in water jumping competitions. We never tire of this event. Check out some video from last year.
