Historic Hotels undergo Major Renovation

We are springing into warmer weather with a fresh new look! We are pleased to announce we have recently completed major renovations to two of the historic properties in the Charming Inns collection. Both the Kings Courtyard Inn, and the John Rutledge House Inn have just completed updates that will breathe new life into our centuries-old buildings.

King Street View

The Charming Inns collection of family owned and operated hotels and restaurants have been a mainstay in the hospitality industry since Charleston’s first tourism boom in the 1980s. The company’s first property, the Kings Courtyard Inn, opened its doors in 1983. The Kings Courtyard Inn was one of the first inns to occupy the then-abandoned buildings along lower King Street and jump-started the area’s revitalization. The second addition to the Charming Inns portfolio was the John Rutledge House Inn on Broad Street. The John Rutledge House, circa 1763, was introduced in 1989 after the renovation of the home of U.S. Constitution signer, John Rutledge.

We have taken great care in retaining each property’s natural charm, character, and architectural details. We are constantly hearing praise from our guests who are impressed with the inns’ ability to maintain historic integrity, while offering modern comfort and conveniences. In January 2014, both the Kings Courtyard Inn and John Rutledge House Inn underwent major renovations to further update and modernize.

The Kings Courtyard Inn renovation highlights include a newly designed lobby with freshly painted café latte walls and reupholstered furniture. Thirty of the inn’s forty one guest bathrooms were renovated, boasting glass showers, chrome fixtures, new tile flooring, and what Innkeeper Lisa Anderson describes as “decadent” black marble countertops.

Renovation projects throughout the 250-year-old John Rutledge House Inn include new wall coverings throughout the expansive stairwells and hallways and new herringbone hardwood floors in ground floor rooms. Each bathroom in the main house was completely gutted and reconstructed, now showcasing seamless glass showers, marble countertops, tile floors, chrome fixtures, and bright, beautiful lighting. The John Rutledge House Inn is comprised of three buildings; two of those being carriage houses at the rear of the main house. Carriage house renovations are slated for the winter of 2015.
