Penelope Explores Neighborhoods South of Broad

On her third week of summer vacation, Penelope the Pineapple discovered that Charleston looks just a bit more beautiful in June. Everything slows down. Steamy mornings give way to clear, beautiful nights. Flowers are in full bloom. People are out strolling the streets. All is well in the world.

After a private guided tour of downtown last week, Penelope decided to venture out solo this afternoon. She rented a bike and set off to explore the famous Charleston neighborhoods “South of Broad.”

Penelope took sight seeing recommendations from the Charming Inns staff and learned some fun facts along the way. Now she’s ready to test your Charleston knowledge!

Stop One: Historic East Bay Street

Penelope Week 3

This beautiful line of pastel, candy colored homes along East Bay Street has a nickname.

What do locals call this area of town? Rainbow Row!

Stop Two: White Point Gardens and the Battery

Penelope Week 3__

Local fable says that “two rivers meet” here at the Battery to “create the Atlantic Ocean.” While the validity of this story is still up for debate, there are in fact two rivers visible from a spot at the famous Battery.

What are the names of Charleston’s two most well-known rivers? The Ashley River and the Cooper River

Stop Three: Admiring the homes “South of Broad”

Penelope Week 3_

Penelope stopped on Tradd Street to admire the rows of charming homes and these flowering trees, which in the South, bloom during the month of June. The streets of Charleston are lined with their white, hot pink and deep purple blooms.

What is the name of this flowering tree? A Crepe Myrtle.
