Penelope the Pineapple wants to end her four-week summer vacation in Charleston with a bang. With the 4th of July just days away, Penelope’s week literally will end with a bang – the bang of fireworks exploding in the night sky!
Summertime activities in Charleston are abundant. The 4th of July is no exception. With so many enticing options of fireworks, food, sand and sunshine, what’s a pineapple to do?
Penelope consulted our concierge team for suggestions on Charleston’s best Fourth of July celebrations. Their top recommendation was to head over to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant to marvel at fireworks from the deck of an aircraft carrier. The dazzling, colorful panoramic fireworks display has been named one of the best in South Carolina, but the Patriots Point 4th of July celebration is also special for another reason.
Home to a Naval and Maritime Museum, this sight is a fascinating tribute to the men and service women who have – and continue to – fight for American independence.
Penelope didn’t want to miss out on a history lesson, so she hopped on a water taxi, crossed the Cooper River, left downtown Charleston in the distance, and set off to explore Patriots Point. Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum houses a fully operating mess hall for hungry explorers, a Medal of Honor Museum, Cold War Memorial, Vietnam War Support Base and is home to not just one – but three- aircraft carriers.
Which three military vessels are on display here at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum?
#1 – The USS Yorktown aircraft carrier
#2- The Clamagore submarine
#3 – The Laffey destroyer
