A Dog on Vacation at the John Rutledge House Inn

Dogs are cherished members of many families. Yet, when it's time for a vacation, few hotels allow the furrier four-legged family members to come along. Set in the heart of downtown Charleston, dogs are welcome guests at the John Rutledge House Inn. We make it easy for every family member to enjoy the sites, sounds and tastes of Charleston.

Here is a tale about a pet-friendly John Rutledge House Inn experience, through the eyes of our recent guest Tara Barkley and her dog, Poppi. Thanks, Tara for sharing your memories and photos!

“I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, so my family vacationed in Charleston every summer. I got Poppi when she was two months old, so she's been my "dogger" (daughter) for about 2 and a half years. Dogs usually aren't allowed in the hotels we travel to. We were so lucky to have found the John Rutledge House Inn and have the option to bring our dog along. Having her with us is what made this trip to Charleston so special.

Poppi is a huge part of my life, so I loved having her with me. We took her for her first beach trip at Isle of Palms. I wasn't sure how she would react to the sand and the ocean. I was thrilled when she bravely ran in the sand. Turns out she is an excellent doggy paddler!

To sum up our stay at the John Rutledge House Inn? In just three words: it was impressive, relaxing and perfect."

And now a few words from the Poppi herself...

“I can't believe I finally was able to go with mom & dad out of town! I got to walk down to the park and see Charleston Harbor. I loved my room at John Rutledge House Inn. When mom & dad went out at night, I got to stay in the air-conditioned room and watch Real Housewives on Bravo. The room was so nice.

Everyone that worked at the Inn was so nice and welcoming. They even brought me bacon in the morning for breakfast. I loved sniffing around in the ivy in the courtyard...I had never seen ivy before. I am SO lucky that the awesome folks at John Rutledge House Inn let me stay in their carriage house. If I wasn't allowed to stay there, I would've never gotten to go to the beach, bark at horses, sniff ivy or make so many good friends!”
